Hi, I’m Carlo Miranda.
I’m a painter specializing in photorealistic oil painting, with a focus on capturing the subtle interplay of light, texture, and detail. My work has been exhibited in museum settings, including the San Diego Museum of Art, and is largely self-taught through years of careful observation and layered technique.
Before fully dedicating myself to painting, I worked as a registered nurse—a path that deeply shaped how I approach art. Painting became a way to explore psychological introspection, empathy, and the quiet emotional weight of everyday moments. I’m drawn to ordinary subjects, working to reveal their depth and significance through precision and atmosphere.

Meet the instructor and get a full overview of the course. This section covers the journey into photorealism, essential tools and materials (brushes, paints, and surfaces), and how to set up and prepare a studio space.
MODULE 2
Drawing Foundations
Learn more about the drawing foundations, understand light, and get a summary of the Loomis method. This section also covers the gridline method.
MODULE 3
Color Theory
Introduction to color theory (chroma, hue, and saturation), materials, and setup. This section includes exercises for creating a greyscale and a color wheel, a breakdown of the basic colors used, and instructions on how to store a palette.
MODULE 4
Color Theory
Learn more about the painting foundations, get a clear view on how to setup your materials. This section also covers the specific uses for each brush and proper brush care.
MODULE 5
Preparing Your Surface
Dive into surface preparation, including how to apply a sketch and fixative. This section covers the application of GAC100 and clear gesso, followed by sanding and applying an imprimatura.
MODULE 6
Painting A Portrait
Deep dive into the structures of the face and the portrait painting process, including drawing and preparing the panel. This section covers mixing paint, workflow, and detailed lessons on painting the eyes, nose, lips, and ears, as well as arms, tattoos, and hair..
MODULE 7
Finalizing Your Work
This module covers finalizing the work, which includes putting the final touches on your painting and the techniques of the varnishing process.
MODULE 8
Bonus
