In this course, you’ll start with the basics: warm-up exercises, line control, and simple construction. From there, you’ll learn how to design cute faces and bodies, create appealing shapes, and turn simple figures into expressive characters.
Step by step, you’ll move from basic forms to complete characters, learning how to keep them cute, give them personality and poses, and begin developing your own style without copying.

Hey, I'm Carlianne!
 I’m an illustrator and artist from New Zealand, now based on Vancouver Island, Canada. I work with international clients on projects in publishing, surface pattern design, and art licensing, and I also run my own brand, In My Backyard, which features a line of stationery and illustrated goods.
This course is designed with beginners in mind. It’s an introduction to keeping a sketchbook as a visual diary, using gardens and parks as inspiration with all the wonderful life they contain. I find the colours, shapes, and textures of the natural world an endless source of inspiration, and filling sketchbook pages with these observations is a vital part of my creative practice. My sketchbooks are where I experiment with materials, discover new colour combinations, and allow myself the freedom to play.

Course Content
The course includes 10 modules, x videos, and more than 6 hours of learning and practice, plus exercises and PDFs to support your progress. All content includes English and Spanish subtitles, and you can pause or replay every lesson as many times as you want. The course is suitable for all ages, and it’s best to follow it in order, since it starts with the basics and gradually moves into more advanced lessons.
