Hi, Iâm Benedek Chen,
an animal portraitist and illustrator based in Michigan, USA.
My journey began in my early teens after moving to the USA, when loneliness and new challenges led me to pick up a paintbrush. At first, my art was clumsy and uninspired, but over time I discovered that painting was more than techniqueâit was a way to express emotions words couldnât capture.
A wildlife assignment changed everything: the eyes of an antelope reflected the sadness I felt inside, and I realized that animal portraits could tell deep, personal stories. Since then, each piece I create has been a journey of self-expression, and I now share this passion through teaching, helping students create stylized, expressive pet portraits while discovering their own artistic voice.
