Stop-motion looks like magic. It isn't.
You've watched Coraline, Kubo, the viral clips of action figures fighting across a desk. You've probably thought: I'd love to do that. Then you open an app, snap 40 photos and the figure just jitters.
Here's the truth. Stop-motion is a craft of small, learnable principles. Once you see them, every frame starts making sense.
-
01
Your animation jitters.
Poses jump around and nothing feels smooth, but you cannot tell why.
-
02
Tutorials skip the basics.
Most videos show gear and apps, not the principles that make motion believable.
-
03
You think you need a studio.
Pro sets look expensive, so you never start with what is already on your desk.
-
04
Your characters feel weightless.
They float instead of landing, lifting or reacting.
Hi, I'm Justin.
I've been animating professionally for over 30 years. I animated at Laika on ParaNorman and Kubo and the Two Strings, contributed to Guillermo del Toro's Oscar-winning Pinocchio, and worked on CG cinematics at Blizzard for Overwatch, World of Warcraft and Hearthstone.
Today I run Stunt Puppet Pictures, making the stop-motion shorts you may have seen online. This course is everything I wish someone had shown me on day one.
Keep guessing, and the figures stay on the shelf.
Without a method.
- Hundreds of photos that still look choppy.
- Characters that float instead of land.
- Starting over every weekend.
- Figures back on the shelf.
With the fundamentals.
- Smooth arcs and believable timing.
- Weight, reaction and intent in every pose.
- A clear path from exercise to scene.
- Short films you are proud to post.
What you'll unlock with this course.
01
The core principles.
Arcs, anticipation, timing, spacing, squash and stretch. The foundation of every great shot, learned with a simple ball.
02
Characters with weight.
Posing, emotion, jumps, throws and props. Make a figure feel heavy, alive and connected to its world.
03
Acting that reads.
Two-character scenes and pantomime so your animation tells a story, with a bonus on dialogue and lipsync.
From a ball to a performance.
We start with the simplest object there is: a ball. Arcs, anticipation, timing, spacing, squash and stretch. Then we swap the ball for a character and keep building.
Posing and weight. Jumps and throws. Picking up props. Two characters reacting to each other. And finally, acting without a single word. Every module builds on the last, so you always know what to practise next.
Eight modules. Frame by frame.
Tap a module to see inside.
01Introduction, tools and planning
Set up a tiny studio with your phone, a tripod, a lamp and a figure. Pick your software and plan a shot before you touch a frame.
02Getting your feet wet
Ball exercises that teach everything: arcs, anticipation, timing and spacing, squash and stretch.
03Choosing your character
Pick a puppet or action figure that works for you, then learn posing, emotion and how to sell weight.
04Advanced mechanics exercises
Jumps, throws and complex actions. Where your animation starts to feel physical.
05Intro to physical interactions
Picking up, holding and handling props so hands and objects feel connected.
06Animating 2 characters
Blocking a scene with two characters and timing their reactions to each other.
07Pantomime. Acting begins.
Tell a story with no dialogue. Pure performance through body, rhythm and timing.
08Dialogue, lipsync and acting
BONUS
Mouth shapes, syncing to audio and acting choices that make a line land.
What you'll get.
Not just new skills. A new way of looking at every object on your desk.
I want this.
Start today at home.
Animate with your phone, a lamp and the figures you already own.
Understand every frame.
Know why a move works, so you can fix it when it does not.
Finish real shots.
Every module ends with something you have actually animated.
Learn from the pros.
Studio habits from Laika and Blizzard, explained for beginners.
A craft that slows you down.
A tactile, hands-on hobby away from endless scrolling.
Share your work.
Build a reel of clips ready to post and show off.
The platform.
Pre-recorded video lessons you watch at your own pace. Each one ends with an exercise you shoot at home, so you learn by animating, not by watching.
Dialogue, lipsync and acting.
Once your characters can move, give them a voice. This bonus module covers mouth shapes, syncing to audio and the acting choices that make a line land.
