What to expect? 

Create & prepare your canvas

Create your form (mug, plate or tile), bring it to a soft leather-hard state, and store it in a wet box until you're ready to decorate.

Design your relief

Gather inspiration, sketch a concept that fits your form, plan the layout, and add color notes so every sprig has a place before any clay touches the surface.

Sculpt & assemble 3D sprigs

Sculpt each piece from reference, hollow it out to reduce weight, even out the moisture in the wet box, then score, slip and press every piece into place with clean, supported joins.

Color, glaze & finish

Underglaze painting, a color-setting bisque, liner glaze and clear coat, the final glaze firing, plus tips on photographing and pricing the finished ware.

Hello, I'm Bethany

I'm creating an online surface design course where I'll teach you the sculptural techniques behind @good naturedwares: sculpted leaves & berries, carved vines, and the vibrant, magical palette that makes each piece a wilderness wonder.

My art leans hard into nature. I paint landscapes in underglaze, building them up in layers, and I make sculptural pieces that approaches realism but still leaves room for a bit of whimsy. A lot of my process is about problem-solving too: keeping a highly decorated piece from getting too heavy, getting clean details without overworking the clay, and figuring out how to share it all online in a way that does it justice.

In this course, I'm walking through all of it, the techniques, the fixes I've learned the hard way, and the habits that make a real difference, so you can build your own skills and bring that same magic into your work.

I'm the potter behind @goodnaturedwares, a small home studio where I make nature-inspired handmade ceramics one piece at a time.

Every piece carries a botanical detail: an olive branch pressed into the rim, a small berry sculpted onto the side, a carved vine finding its way around a mug. No molds, no rush. Just clay, foliage from the garden, and a lot of quiet attention.

My background is actually in graphic design. I studied it alongside ceramics in school, then spent years doing design work in insurance and real estate. Clay was always the thing I did on the side, until the pull got too strong to ignore, and I left design behind to build a life around pottery. I started selling my sculptures and pieces, and picked up teaching along the way too, mostly wheel throwing, which has grown into a bigger part of my work than I expected. I've taught over a thousand students so far.
