Want to create places full of emotion and story
If your environments are lacking depth or feeling stiff, this course shows you how to start from emotion, and establish theme pillars and design intent instead of guesswork.
Want to develop a consistent and effective workflow
No desktop, no elaborate pen display, no extra software. You'll learn how to set up Procreate, your brushes and your space so you can sketch, iterate and finish professional concept art from anywhere using only your Ipad.
Want to simplify the fundamentals
You'll learn simple ways to make sense of complex topics like design, color, and composition. The big/medium/small rule, the 60/30/10 color rule and notan sketching will help build a bulletproof process which you can rely on.
then this course is for you
what we'llĀ learn
mood & reference
Starting from a feeling, an influence, a single sentence - before a single line is drawn.
loose sketching
Visual note-taking, staying loose, and digging to find the most compelling ideas without wasting time.
value studies
Finding the strongest composition possible to evoke your ideas. Learning to group and compress values to create striking images which read from any distance.
color & light
Understanding how colors harmonize, and using a simple structure wherein the colors amplify the story, rather than muddy it.
refinement
Overcoming the fear of sunk cost, re-aligning with design and theme pillars, tightening what matters and letting go of what doesn't.
final illustration
Knowing when an image is done, making final edits, and extracting design callouts.
I'm Grady!
Iām a senior concept artist and illustrator in the game and animation industry, with clients like Wizards Of The Coast, Blur, Paramount, Eidos and Disney, and Iāve been a professional for over 10 years. I have a tremendous passion for atmospheric storytelling and design.
I started my career in background painting for animation, but always wanted to be a concept or visual development artist. After self-teaching and landing a few indie projects, I decided to spend all of my savings to go to school in Montreal and learn from real working professionals. Long story short, I have been a professional concept artist and illustrator ever since! I also run Patreon and YouTube, and I'm writing and illustrating my own book called Black Shore.
I hope to impart as much knowledge and experience as I can, but most of all I am fervently committed to helping others find joy and fulfillment through the pursuit of drawing and painting.

"Grady Frederick is a master of narrative environments; his ability to weave atmosphere into every piece provides an incredible lesson in cinematic design. We are delighted to welcome Grady back to our school; his previous classes were a massive hit with our students. Having him share his workflow once again is a fantastic opportunity to learn from such a dedicated artist."
"Grady is an absolute beast both in terms of producing art (obvious) but also in terms of communicating how/why he does things as well as giving feedback. He takes time to explain his thinking and really opens your mind to different possibilities. His streams are highly educational while he's grounded at all times, with confidence but never arrogance, speaking his mind with respect and kindness."
"Iāve been following Gradyās work for many yearsĀ and with every piece he creates I feel inspired. He has such mastery of mood, light and story. Heās very kind as a person and equally inspiring. When someone asks who are my inspirations Grady is definitely one of the firsts I keep mentioning. Iām very glad to be in his community and get to connect with him in the first place."
