Turn blank walls into wonder

A mural painting course with Josh Harnack

Hi, I'm Josh, a muralist and painter based in Edmonton. I have over a decade of experience in painting murals and a lifetime of being creative. Most of what I learned about murals I picked up wall by wall. The first mural I ever painted, I was terrified the whole time and had no idea what I was doing. I’ve made almost every mistake there is on the road to getting to where I am and I’ve created this course so you don’t have to repeat the same mistakes. Let me show you how I actually work, and teach you everything that I know.

Through six modules, from creating a solid idea, to the final coat of sealant, I'll show you absolutely everything: sketching, scaling, surface prep, and every decision in between so you can feel confident on the wall.

I'll tell you why you don't need a "signature style" before you start, how you can turn any idea into a mural, and how to keep a thirty-foot wall as playful as a sketchbook page.

Hi, I'm Josh!

My first mural was painted in 2014 on the ceiling of a frat house in Vancouver with dollar-store paint. It wasn’t exactly a promising start, but it was the beginning of something I’ve now been doing professionally for over a decade. And I’ve learned a lot since.

I grew up in Edmonton, studied design at NAIT, and eventually committed to painting full-time. Over my career, I’ve sold hundreds of paintings around the world and painted dozens of murals across three provinces, working with businesses, communities, cities, and organizations to turn ideas into artwork on walls of all shapes and sizes.
Over the years, I’ve learned that there’s no single way to make a good mural. But there are a lot of unknowns. You don’t need to have a particular style, be an expert painter, or even consider yourself a mural artist. You just need to understand how to take the ideas and skills you already have and adapt them to a much bigger canvas.

I’ll walk you through the process I’ve developed over the years, from coming up with an idea to getting that final top coat down.
The goal is to help you take the artwork you already make and figure out how to make it work on a much bigger scale. By the end of the course you’ll feel a lot less intimidated by that blank wall and a lot more ready to put your own artwork on it.
