Stop-motion looks like magic. It isn't.

You've watched Coraline, Kubo, the viral clips of action figures fighting across a desk. You've probably thought: I'd love to do that. Then you open an app, snap 40 photos and the figure just jitters.

Here's the truth. Stop-motion is a craft of small, learnable principles. Once you see them, every frame starts making sense.

  1. 01

    Your animation jitters.

Poses jump around and nothing feels smooth, but you cannot tell why.

  2. 02

    Tutorials skip the basics.

Most videos show gear and apps, not the principles that make motion believable.

  3. 03

You think you need a studio.

Pro sets look expensive, so you never start with what is already on your desk.

  4. 04

    Your characters feel weightless.

They float instead of landing, lifting or reacting.

01 / The Problem

Concept design is not just drawing cool vehicles.

It is intent, function, and a process you can repeat.

When I started out, I did what most artists do. I copied the designs I admired, followed tutorials, and hoped something original would eventually appear. It rarely did. The drawings looked fine, but they were not designs. Nothing about them explained what the vehicle was for, or why it looked the way it did.

Maybe that sounds familiar. You can sketch. You have watched hours of videos. But when you face a blank canvas and a brief, you are not sure where to start, and your first ideas end up looking like everything you have already seen.

Here is the truth. Original design is not a talent you are born with. It is a process, and it can be learned.

In Concept Vehicle Design, I share the workflow I use in production: how to build a visual library, find the function behind a form, push past weak first drafts, and carry a design from loose silhouette to orthographic views to a finished render.

By the end, you will not only have finished ships and vehicles to share. You will have a repeatable method you can bring to any hard-surface design you want to create.

Because great vehicle design is not about drawing more. It is about learning to think like a designer.

Your Instructor

Hi, I'm Gavin.

I’m a Senior/Principal Concept Artist in the games industry, specialising in hard-surface design and environments. I currently work at id Software, and I have contributed to projects for some of the biggest studios and IPs in the world.

Before concept art, I spent 8 years in interior design and worked as a part-time teacher. That background shapes how I approach every vehicle: practically, spatially, and with a clear reason behind every shape.

I also teach through Gnomon Workshop and Learn Squared, where I created a Mech Design course, and I share tutorials and 3D-printable model kits with my community on Instagram and Gumroad. This course is my complete ship and vehicle workflow, structured so you can follow it step by step.

02 / The Gap

Talent is not the missing piece. Process is.

+Imagine opening a brief and knowing exactly how to begin.

+Imagine turning a messy first sketch into a clear, confident silhouette.

+Imagine presenting vehicles with orthographic views and renders that read as professional.

Without a process, the pattern repeats. You copy, you polish, you stall. Your portfolio fills with pieces that look good but cannot answer the one question every art director asks: why does it look like this?

Without a Process

Copying references until something feels right

Polishing the first idea because it is the only one

Shapes chosen because they look cool

One hero shot with nothing behind it

With This Course

Building a visual library and designing from it

Exploring loose silhouettes before committing

Every form driven by function and intent

Orthographic views, 3/4 sketches and renders

Concept Vehicle Design was built to close that gap, step by step, using the same methods I rely on in AAA production.

03 / Outcomes

What You Will Unlock

Three core skills that separate a sketch from a design, each built through real-time demos and guided exercises.

Draw With Technical Confidence

Design With Intent

Use flow lines, visual libraries and function-driven thinking so your designs look like they could actually work.

Present Like a Professional

Take ships and vehicles from loose silhouettes to orthographic views, 3/4 sketches and finished renders.
