My course 'Teeming with Life: Illustrating Nature onto Clay' covers the essentials of surface design, how to move past basic shapes with hand-built forms, how to use underglaze and inlay to dictate mood, and how to carve sgraffito details that feel like they’re growing right off the surface. Hi, I'm Kyra!

I’m an artist from rural northeast Kansas. I grew up with a love of drawing and a curiosity about the inner workings of the natural world. I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting from Washburn University in Topeka, where I developed an interest in combining illustration and ceramics. My work explores themes of flora and fauna, the importance of biodiversity, and the relationship between humans and the natural world.

I currently create artwork from my home studio while also managing a small hospitality business with my family. My work is exhibited nationally, online, and at local art fairs. I’m an active member of my town’s art council and am passionate about making art more accessible to rural communities.

Each ceramic piece I create is completely handmade, from the form to the carefully carved illustration on the surface, inviting the viewer to slow down and closely observe the environment that inspires me.

Module 1 & 2:

Introduction & Clay Forms

Start your journey by grounding yourself in the essentials of both mindset and material. We’ll cover the tools of the trade before diving into the physical creation of your canvas- exploring hand-building techniques like pinch, coil, and slab, as well as wheel-throwing fundamentals to create the perfect ceramic forms for illustration.

Module 3:

Creating Your Design

Bridge the gap between a 2D idea and a 3D surface. In this module, you’ll learn my personal process for brainstorming nature-inspired themes, sketching for curved surfaces, and using stencils or image transfers to ensure your botanical and biological illustrations fit perfectly on your clay form.

Module 4 & 5:

Underglaze Painting & Inlay Techniques

Transform your work with professional color application and precision. This section dives into underglaze painting- from layering for vibrance to choosing the right brushes- plus a deep dive into inlay techniques. You'll learn to prepare your clay, manage moisture levels, and create crisp, contrast-heavy linework that will remain clean and detailed.

Module 6 & 7:

Sgraffito & Combined Methods

Master the art of subtraction by carving through layers of color to reveal the clay beneath. You’ll explore Sgraffito techniques to create rhythmic lines and textures before learning how to combine these with inlay methods. This final stage brings everything together, showing you how to balance line thickness and atmosphere to create complex, story-driven ceramic surfaces
