Unexpected
Watercolor

Are you frustrated with watercolor feeling unpredictable or messy? Maybe you’ve bought supplies already and gotten started but aren’t really making art on your own yet? Do your final pieces sometimes feel a little off, or only look good with outlines?

What if I tell you that watercolor can actually be precise,
predictable, and forgiving?

Hi, I am Emily Bourassa, and I have created an online course for anyone who loves the look and feel of watercolor but wants to build the confidence of really knowing what they're doing. Any skill level- whether you’re just getting started or are more advanced.
You'll learn to create strong value structure, every time. You’ll mix perfect colors and understand how to get that just right shade without buying another tube of paint. You’ll also learn how to simplify complex shapes and create paintings look 3 dimensional. Step by step, you'll go from basic exercises to painting real objects. No more messes, no more stress.

You can now enroll in the wait list to be the first one to get informed once the course opens. And on top of that, you'll  get a special discount available only for you!

Together we’ll learn:

Step One:

Get the basics right:

Value and Color mixing are at the heart of
every painting. We’ll focus on these and practice the basic
principles so that you can use them easily before adding in other
elements.

Step Two:

Focus on creating 3 dimensional shapes

Form shadows, cast shadows and mastering the basic shapes that are behind every
object.

Step Three:

Putting it all together.

We’ll practice combining all of these lessons with easy shapes, and then much more difficult ones! You’ll be able to take these lessons and apply them to anything you want to paint, without guidance!

I am Emily Bourassa.

Los Angeles based artist and illustrator educated at UCLA and RISD, and currently earning my M.F.A. from SCAD.

I was never an artist growing up, simply because I thought I was terrible at drawing and needn't bother to learn. I moved in the direction of other creative pursuits, all the while, insanely jealous of anyone who was drawing and painting with ease.

At age 37, knee deep in Covid quarantine, I realized that I had better make the most of this one and only life and now move in the direction of the things I had been avoiding. Drawing, painting, making art flowed out of me with an insatiable desire to keep going.

I've always been someone who likes to dive deep with my interests, this time it was close examination of my favorite things to paint- vegetables on the cutting board that are about to be dinner. An insect we found in the yard. Seashells! Everything in nature is insanely beautiful without even trying to be, and with my brush in hand, I can turn the volume up on that little bit of unexpected color that might otherwise go unnoticed. I decide what the most interesting bits are, and highlight them.

I work mostly in watercolor, it's the most peaceful of media for me, although I like to do a little bit of everything. At the moment, my favorite challenge is to work start to finish with just one medium.
