Water You Waiting For? Portrait Painting
Dive into the world of watercolor portrait painting with 55+ videos and 5+ hours of content
Hello, I'm Nicola!
I am a watercolor artist based in New York City.
My painting style is loose, expressive, and atmospheric. I believe a simple portrait holds the power to reveal complex stories, whether it be of love, loss, resilience, or hope. Through these stories our sense of connection and understanding in our shared humanity is deepened. This is the true beauty of portraiture.
Both in my own art and in my teaching I encourage freedom, showing that watercolor is not about total control but about letting go and seeing what happens. I love sharing this approach with my students and helping them build confidence and connect with watercolor as a joyful and really magical medium.
Imagine overcoming your fears…
Imagine picking up a brush and painting a portrait with complete confidence; not worrying if the eyes are level or the skin tones are muddy, because you finally understand the system. At first, your mind worries about the "unpredictability" of water and the challenge of anatomy. But what if you had a roadmap to guide every single layer?
By the end of this course, you won’t just have new skills. You’ll have a professional perspective on how to approach watercolor portraiture from the first plumb line to the final dark wash with total technical confidence.
At the end of the course you will be able to:
Paint Confidently
You’ll create portraits inspired by human anatomy, light, and shadow, capturing a true likeness of your subject with technical ease.
Observe Fresh
Shapes, and textures will become your guide as you learn to observe and translate them onto paintings.
Playfully Explore
Your portraits will become a space to experiment, explore, and develop a personal way of painting.
Course Content
The course has 10 modules for 10+ hours of learning and practicing. It also includes full-length artwork tutorials! You can pause and replay the videos as much as you want. The course is suitable for everyone, teens, adults and children because there is no explicit content. It would be best to take the course in order, because it will start from the basics to lessons at a more advanced level.Â
Practice makes perfect!Â
In my course you will learn:
Module 1&2
We will start with a clear introduction to the course, materials, and creative process. From there, you’ll naturally transition into the fundamentals of drawing the human head, where you’ll explore proportions, facial structure, angles, and the impact of light and shadow. Together, these modules are designed to help you move from understanding the basics to confidently constructing accurate and expressive portraits, setting the stage for the techniques that follow.
Module 3&4
We will deepen your understanding by combining precise drawing techniques with the fundamentals of color and tone. You’ll learn how to accurately measure and map out your subject using reliable methods, ensuring strong proportions and placement. Building on this, you’ll explore color theory, tonal values, and limited palettes, helping you bring structure and harmony to your work while preparing for the transition from drawing to painting.
Module 5&6
I will guide you into the practical application of watercolor, blending essential techniques with the first stages of your painting process. You’ll explore key methods such as wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, and dry-on-dry, gaining control over how the medium behaves. Then, you’ll apply these skills as you begin your painting, learning how to plan effectively, preserve light areas, and lay down your first washes with confidence.
Module 7&8
We will focus on building depth and dimension in your portrait by working through midtones and dark values. You’ll learn how to gradually develop form by layering midtones, then strengthen contrast and definition by introducing darker tones. Together, these stages help bring structure, realism, and balance to your painting, allowing your portrait to come to life with greater clarity and impact.
Module 9&10
You will be able to bring your portrait to completion, focusing on refinement and final presentation. You’ll add the finishing touches, make subtle adjustments, and enhance details to achieve a polished result. The course then concludes with a wrap-up, giving you the opportunity to review your progress, receive feedback, and confidently celebrate your completed work.
