The paper, pencils and tools you’ll need, plus pencil pressure, layering, blending and drawing at a smaller scale.
Choosing the right colours
Find a great reference photo, pick out colours from your image and understand undertones.
Creating your outline
Turn a photo into a clean line drawing with graphite, simple shapes and tracing methods.
Realistic fur textures
Fur direction, smooth, curly, white and black fur for dogs, and short and long fur for cats.
Eyes, noses & mouths
Bring your portrait to life with the facial features of both cats and dogs.
Drawing your own pet
Put it all together with base colours, shadows, highlights and whiskers, then draw your own cat or dog
Hi, I'm Becky!
I’m a Portrait Artist based in Manchester, specialising in pet, people and wildlife art. I create highly detailed portraits in both graphite and coloured pencil, with a special love for miniature pet portraits of dogs and cats.
I’ve been drawing since childhood and went on to study for a Fine Art degree. During the pandemic I started sharing my work online, and it has since grown into a full-time commission business. You’ll also find me at markets and trade shows around the UK.
Now I’m sharing the techniques behind my mini coloured pencil portraits, so you can learn to draw your own pet too.
